The Nuuksio National Park

Nuuksio is one of Finland's protected national parks where visitors can follow nature trails and find themselves by the side of a lake, berry-picking and mushroom-foraging in leafy woodland, standing in a meadow of wild flowers or atop a hill looking over the scenery below. This National Park is also home to some rare species of flora and fauna, notably squirrels, deer and snakes. Finnish nature is full of healthy food and medicine; from trees, berries, mushrooms and wild herbs. They grow in unpolluted woods and during long summer days they get their strong power to heal. While Nuuksio is undoubtedly unspoilt and an area of great natural beauty, it is surprisingly close to Espoo city centre. There you can choose your own way to relax in the wilderness: riding, cycling, climbing, picking berries and mushrooms, swimming, snowshoeing, letterboxing, skiing or trekking. You can even stay overnight in a tent or lean-to shelter. There are almost 30 kilometres of trekking trails close to fabulous ponds. Nuuksio National Park was established in the north-western corner of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area in 1994. It is the second-closest national park to the capital after Sipoonkorpi National Park.  Nuuksio boasts rugged forests dotted with lakes, ponds and rocks. The national park is a popular day trip destination for people in the Metropolitan Area, with nearly 270,000 visitors.

The popularity has sky rocketed since the new Finnish Nature Centre Haltia was opened in Nuuksio in 2013. The use of latest technology allows the centre to showcase “magnificent landscapes and the wonders of nature.” The centre’s main exhibitions show photographs and videos of Finland’s most established nature photographers, and the centre has a 18-metre panorama wall of Finnish scenery.

Haltia exhibits also an interactive map of Finland which can be walked upon, and its modern camera technology allows visitors to explore over 80 Finnish nature destinations. Haltia is open every day and has also a restaurant which serves local organic food. According to the centre, tourists can combine visit to Haltia with a hike in the Natural Park, and outdoor gear is available for hire.

Nuuksio National Park  is the most extensive and ecologically important woodland area in southern Finland. Sometimes it is called the Park of Fifty Lakes. Indeed, about 50 picturesque lakes can be found within the park border, while the entire area of Nuuksio Uplands has some 150 small lakes. Compared to surrounding plains, the hilly area of Nuuksio is 50-100 m higher than sea level. Hiking in wild evergreen forest among ancient cliffs, densely covered by mosses, lichens and ferns, and numerous small, clean lakes is unforgettable experience.

In addition to a diverse collection of trees and plant life, Nuuksio is home to many endangered and threatened species of wildlife, including the Siberian Flying Squirrel, which the park has adopted for its signature emblem. If you fail to find any flying squirrels in the woods, you can definitely find pictures and information at the Haukkalampi Nature Hut located at the center of the park. Nuuksio National Park is the finest and wildest area of woodland close to Helsinki – one of the best places to look for woodpeckers and with a chance of owls, Capercaillie and Hazel Grouse too. In summer, both Red-breasted Flycatcher and Greenish Warbler occur here in variable numbers.

Nuuksio National Park is one of Finland's most important and stunning nature reserves. It consists of the westernmost part of the Nuuksio lake uplands, a large and unique area, home to several rare species of flora and fauna. Nuuksio is a favourite of Prince Philip, head of the World Wildlife Fund.

Nuuksio is packed with stunning scenery: everything from bogs, swamps and ponds to cliffs, dense forests, wide-open vistas, valleys and ravines. There is much to do: fishing, berry-picking, mushroom-collecting, orienteering, hiking, swimming or skiing. Horse-trekking is also offered by certain companies. You can buy food from a nearby café or cook your own at one of the many cooking or campfire spots. Nuuksio National Park is ideal for hiking, cycling or horse riding. The trails are marked and there are also refuges and fire places. You can also swimming or stroll through the park to pick mushrooms and berries. It is a great place for outdoor escape and ideal for trekking of various duration.

The park is covered by tall coniferous and mixed forest, growing on and among enormous primeval rocks, rich with mosses and ferns. The main feature of the park is its numerous small and clean forest lakes, where one can get fantastic swimming experience.
