Arshan village

Arshan is unique village and famous resort that is known for its fantastic hot springs and amazing mineral water. Arshan is translated as "healing water" from the Buryat language. It means "nectar, the drink of the gods". Carbonaceous silicon mineral water in the spring is unique all over the world - it has a complicated mineral composition and rich in microelements. Those places which have mineral water coming out on the surface are considered sacred, people set up objects of worship. Dense Siberian forest, fresh air, mountainous river Kyngyrga with beautiful waterfalls and natural medicinal springs make Arshan one of the most attractive places for rest in Siberia.

Arshan is located at the foot of the astonishing Sayan Mountains in a beautiful Tunka Valley about 210 km/130 mi south of famous Irkutsk city. The place is very popular among local residents because of the healing properties of mineral springs, and majestic views of Tunka Valley. Springs of Arshan belong to carbon dioxide-sulphate-magnesium type. They have a complex chemical composition and are rich in trace elements. The waters are very rich in minerals and microelements, they are effective for drinking and used for treatments. Springs are used to treat disorders of cardiovascular and digestive system, liver and biliary tract, pulmonary disease, metabolism disorders and functional disorders of nervous system. Use of fresh water generates the greatest effect. Sacred forest builds gradually around springs: the cured patients tie ribbons onto the trees.

In the past the Buddhists attributed Arshan properties to some freshwater springs, therefore all springs with cold, fresh, clean water were called arshans obtaining healing meaning. People have a special attitude towards Arshans. People set up objects of worship, build "obo" (shrines to honor the spirits of their ancestors) and hold prayer services. Curative Arshan springs, which were found by local hunters in 1960-s are popular all over the world. It has a wide range of temperatures: from cold (11-13 °С) to hot (+45 °С). Unlike hot waters of others springs - Arshan originally is cold carbonaceous silicon mineral water. There are a lot of colorful stripes - zaala, which are tight to branches of near-by trees. The water in the spring has curative qualities and is used to heal cold, locomotive system problems. The mineral water is caught by borehalls (985 m3/day) and is being transfered by pipeline to drinking pump rooms and bath building.

Visitors are welcomed by comfortable hotels and basic resort infrastructure. Trip to Arshan is a great option for folks who like to actively experience nature's wonders, explore new places, and mingle with local culture and life.

There are two fantastic datsans (Buddhist temple) where you can visit lamas-healers and astrologists. At one of the sky decks you'll see a wonderful view of the Tunkinsky valley, where volcanoes are located at the very "feet" of the Sayan Mountains, and also see the majestic Khangarulsky mountain range with its numerous high-mountain plateaus. The exterior of Buddhist datsan (Buddhist chapel), in Arshan is traditional for all Buddhist temples. Several roofs lie above one another with their edges curved towards the sky. The lower roof right above the entrance bears a sculpture depicting a golden wheel with two llamas on two sides which symbolizes life. Inside the temple there is a painting narrating about the life of soul after death. In the centre three symbols of a human's fall are depicted in a big circle: hen (unbridled passion), snake (wrath), and boar (ignorance). Above, souls that have abandoned their bodies are represented; each of them has its own way. The souls of the people who have made more good deeds take a way of light, while those who have made more bad deeds take the dark way. These ways represent Karma that the person has deserved in his or her mortal life. Below, torments for abandoning oneself to passions are depicted.

The powerful and noisy Kyngarga River flows into the Irkut River and runs through the village. If you follow the river's trail you'll see a breathtaking canyon and dozens of small and large waterfalls. The first one and the biggest is located 1.5 km away from Arshan resort. The waterfall reaches the height of 7 meters. There is a small bridge put above the canyon of 10 meters high. The next and further waterfalls are 3 meters and shorter. The most beautiful of all waterfalls is considered to be fan Cascade. One may climb higher and find bushes of blackberries and mountain cranberries, as well as bushes of sagaan-dali plant (rhododendron of Adams). Tea made with the leaves of this plant is very healthy.

Arshan is considered to be one of the natural pearls of Russia.
