The governing organization is the Colombian Football Federation. It is a member of the CONMEBOL and is currently ranked sixteenth in the FIFA World Rankings. The team are nicknamed Los Cafeteros due to the coffee production in their country.

José Néstor Pékerman Krimen (born September 3, 1949, Villa Domínguez, Argentina) is an Argentinian footballer of Jewish descent, who played in the 1970s for Argentinos Juniors and Independiente Medellín clubs as a midfielder, now is the head coach of Colombia. Pekerman was the coach of Argentina's youth team who won the FIFA championship in 1995, 1997 and 2001. He led the team of Argentina during the 2006 World Cup.
