Kingdom of Permafrost, Yakutsk

Yakutsk is surrounded by a set of hills. In Soviet times, the adit of one of them, near Chochur-Muran mountain, was used as a huge cellar for storing food. In November 2008 in this dungeon opened a tourist center - "The Kingdom of Permafrost".

At the entrance to the "Kingdom" visitors are given warm raincoats and felt boots. This is necessary - in summer, the temperature in the cave does not rise above –4. But in the winter it does not fall below –10, so that after a fifty-degree Yakut frost you can warm up.

If you look at the walls, you will see with your own eyes what permafrost is: all the moisture in the soil is frozen, and the earth is literally riddled with ice streaks. Ice forms crystals shining in the light of colored lamps.

Inside the gallery is divided into several halls. In the first, guests are met by Chishkhaan, the lord of the cold - here his residence. There is a ritual hall for traditional Yakut rites. In another room you can ride with an ice slide and take a look at the ice sculptures. Sculptures are allowed to touch - for good luck, for the fulfillment of desires. There was also an attraction in the form of an ice bath with flat walls, but it had to be closed - it turned out to be too traumatic.

In a separate grotto, the organizers staged a small paleontological museum. The exposition contains the bones of primitive animals, preserved in the local permafrost. The exhibits are of no particular value, but it's still curious to see.

There is also an “ice office” and an “ice bar” with traditional frozen treats.

Skillfully arranged lighting is installed in the halls. Multicolored rays are refracted in transparent ice sculptures, reflected from the walls and the floor. Looks impressive.

IMPORTANT
Be careful - in the "Kingdom" very slippery floors! It is better to wear comfortable shoes, preferably with rubber soles.
