Russian Karelia: a beautiful journey in the middle of the nature and the historical artifacts!

The lands of Karelian people occupy the area in Nothern Europe and are of historical importance for Russia, Finland and Sweden. Karelian language is rather close to the Finnish one as its territory earlier was a part of Finland. The Russian part of Karelia is called The Republic of Karelia with its capital and cultural center in Petrozavodsk. Karelia stretches from the White Sea coast to the Batlic Sea shores. Karelia is called “The Land of Lakes” as it has over 60000 lakes on its territory. Among these numerous lakes there two largest lakes in Europe – Ladoga Lake and Onega Lake. Karelia is the area of very beautiful wild nature and rich with magnificent landscapes. Its fresh air is good for health. Karelia has it own national traditions that have been kept in its villages for many centuries till nowadays. Karelian main city Petrozavodsk was founded in 1703 by Peter the Great, who needed a new iron factory for Russian Fleet to win the Great Northern War. By 1717 this place around the factory had grown into the largest settlement in Karelia.
