After his studies at INSAS (Institut National des Arts du Spectacle) in Brussels, Alain Maratrat performed his first role in 1974 in Moliere?s Don Juan, directed by Bernard Sobel. The same year, he joined Peter Brook?s company and performed in almost all the productions of the Centre International - Carmen in 1980 where he was acting coach for the singers, Mahabharata in 1984, where he coached the company in martial arts, Shakespeare?s The Tempest in 1987 and, in 2004, he played Trigorin in Chekhov?s The Seagull. Alain Maratrat has acted in a number of television productions, among them Vitrac?s Victor ou les enfants au pouvoir, Stravinsky?s L?Histoire du soldat and Guerre blanche, directed by Philippe Lefevre.

In cinema, he has performed in La Petite bande by Michel Deville, Le Golem by Amos Gitai (1990) and Lucie Aubrac by Claude Berry. In 1997, he spent a few months in the Himalayas and in Nepal preparing Tibetans to act in the film L?Enfance d?un chef by Eric Vali. In 2003, he acted in the full-length movie L?Enquete Corse directed by Alain Berberian, where he played de Vlamminck.

Alain Maratrat is also a theatre and opera director.
In opera, he has directed Prokofiev?s Love for Three Oranges (1981, revived in 1995 and 1998 in France and abroad), Chabrier?s L?Etoile (1982), Offenbach?s Les Brigands (1987), Passeport musical pour Paris, working with Mstislav Rostropovich on the libretto (1990, performed in 1991 and 1993), Martinu?s Les Trois souhaits (1990), Zarzuela, histoire de un patio (1992, revived in 1994, 1996 and 1998), Salieri?s Falstaff (1996, revived in 2002) and Kodaly?s Harry Janos (1998, where he adapted the libretto).
In theatre, Alain Maratrat has staged Liliom by Ferenc Molnar (1991), Staline by Gaston Salvatore (1994) and Rencontres (1995, after a year-long collective workshop).
In 1996, he worked with the Pyotr Fomenko Studio, and the same year collaborated with young actors and dancers from the Rosella Hightower School of Dance; two years later he worked with this school and its ballet company on La Dame aux camelias. In 1999, he created Romeo was a Shoeshiner with social centres in the townships of Pretoria, South Africa.
In 2004-2005 he directed Peer Gynt in Geneva and Lausanne and The Dispute by Marivaux at the European Theatre of Vidy in Lausanne.
Alain Maratrat has directed variety shows with Jacques Higelin (1992) and Regine (1994).
Starting in 1982, he has regularly conducted workshops to create sensitivity as training for students, professors and young underprivileged people from the suburbs, both in France and abroad.
Since 1999, he has directed yearly improvisation workshops for the Paris Conservatoire.
In 2000, he was in Indonesia working with dancers, actors and singers of traditional Indonesian theatre.
In 2001-2002, he conducted master classes on improvisation with final year students of the Paris Conservatoire.
In 2003-2004, Alain Maratrat did a show written by J-C Carriere in Geneva and Paris with the graduation class from INSAS where he studied.
In 2005, Alain Maratrat received a Golden Sofit, St Petersburg?s highest theatre prize as "Best opera director" for his production of Rossini?s Il viaggio a Reims, ossia L?albergo del giglio d?oro in Mariinsky Theatre.
