The early music ensemble Hortus Musicus was created in 1972 on the initiative of the violinist Andres Mustonen (then a student at the Tallinn Conservatory) and is currently the most durable ensemble of ancient music in Eastern Europe.
The team immediately found its niche in the music world and began to specialize in ancient music, which almost did not sound in the then Soviet Union and Europe. It was the music that corresponded to the energetic desire of young artists to discover something original and unknown.
The performance of music for Hortus musicus in the first place (and often in contrast to European colleagues) is characterized by a creative approach and the lack of stereotypes in relation to works that are distant in time. Not contradicting the now popular "authentic" approach to performance, Hortus does not put it at the forefront of his work. Therefore, the concerts of the ensemble always seem relevant. The music of people living in our time sounds on them.
During the years of the ensemble's existence, the whole history of European music "passed" from its 8th century to the present day: the Gregorian chant - the organums - the medieval liturgical drama - the hymns and the motets - the Franco-Flemish school - the masters of the Italian tricentennial polyphony of the 16th century - the French chanson and the Italian madrigals - frotteles and villanelles - suites from the Renaissance dances from all over Europe - old sonatas and secular large works of baroque masters of the 17th and 18th centuries. - music of the XX century (often created specifically for the ensemble).
The performance of modern music confronts the ensemble with special tasks, first of all, in adapting the possibilities of old instruments with their sound and dynamics to the modern music language. On the other hand, it allows modern music to enrich its palette with the unique sound of Renaissance instruments. Modern music performed by the ensemble carries in itself the same values that we find in early music: purity and clarity of form, harmony and beauty in simple things.
For more than 35 years of activity, the Ensemble has given concerts in most European countries, the United States, Japan, Israel and the territory of the former Soviet Union, and also participated in many early music festivals. The ensemble Hortus musicus recorded 35 programs, incl. on labels Erdenklang, Musica Svecia, Forte and Finlandia Records.

Andres Mustonen is a recognized expert in the field of Middle Ages and Baroque music, the creator and leader of the famous Ensemble Hortus Musicus (1972). Artistic director of the annual Tallinn Baroque Music Festival.
He graduated from the Estonian State Conservatory (now the Estonian Academy of Music, 1977) in violin, trained in Austria and the Netherlands. Even in his student years, he organized an ensemble of ancient music - the first collective in the former USSR, playing authentic instruments. This marked the beginning of the tradition of concerts of ancient music in Estonia, and Mustonen himself became an active propagandist of authentic performing in our country and the countries of Northern Europe.
With the ensemble of Hortus Musicus A.Mustonen performs not only the music of the period from the time of Byelorussia, but also of avant-garde composers. He performed world premieres of many works of Pärt, Kancheli, Gubaidulina, Penderecki, Silvestrov, Knaifel, Tavener and other composers.
A.Mustonen also acts as a symphonic conductor, including the State Symphony Orchestra of Estonia. The creative interests of the maestro are very wide. In his repertoire are the works of Monteverdi and Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven, Bach and Brahms, Schubert and Mendelssohn.
As the conductor Mustonen performed in the ensemble with the leading European performers: O. Kagan, N. Gutman, G. Kremer, T. Grindenko, D. Sytkovetsky, A. Lyubimov, E. Virsaladze, I. Monighetti, P. Gallois, M. Petri and etc.
For many years the maestro has been a welcome guest of the biggest festivals in Berlin, Warsaw, Krakow, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Glasgow, Moscow, Munich, Prague, Bratislava, Boston, Stockholm, Lockenhaus, Innsbruck, London, Zaragoza and other musical capitals of the world.
