The crown jewel of the world palaces, the Winter Palace is one of their most impressive. Standing in the middle of the city it is now home to the world’s largest collection of art called the Hermitage.

The palace is so beautiful that even the Bolsheviks didn't dare to destroy it during their takeover in 1917. With over 3 million items in its collection, it definitely rewards repeat visits, and new-comers can only hope to get a brief taste of the riches on offer here, from Impressionist masterpieces to fascinating Oriental treasures. They say that if you were to spend at least three minutes by each of the exhibits displayed in the Hermitage, it would take you three years to see them all !
