Holy Protection Cathedral

The Intercession Cathedral is one of the oldest stone buildings in Krasnoyarsk and one of its major iconic landmarks. The Cathedral is the architectural monument of the 18th century and is a product of Yenisey school of the Siberian baroque. The Intercession Cathedral is extensively decorated: outside are the paintings and inside are the magnificent images and patterns on the dome and walls.

According to the urban development plan, the Intercession Cathedral was to be built of stone. But at the parishioners’ request, a small wooden church was built first. In the middle of the 18th century, the wooden church burnt down, but it was soon restored because the Eniseysk artisans started to erect the stone building of the cathedral nearby. The Cathedral was built in 1785-1795 at the parishioners expense. First it was supposed to be called the Epiphany Cathedral, but the parishioners voted to name it the Intercession Cathedral. It was consecrated in 1975 and since then is considered fully functional.

A magnificent library was opened here that included over 800 magazines and books. In 1930, the Cathedral was closed, with the public worships restored after the WWII and lasted up to 1961. In 1977-78, the cathedral was renovated and an exhibition hall was added. In 1989, the public worship was restored in the cathedral once again and is still held.
