Khamar-Daban mountain range

Khamar-Daban is a mountain range in Siberia, Russia, near the Baikal mountains. It is a very unique mountain region neat the Baikal Lake. The terrain is beautiful and varied, stretching over 350 km.

Khamar-Daban is the oldest array of the planet. It stretches from west to east more than 350 km and forms a mountainous country at the southern shore of Lake Baikal. It is a system of mountain ranges 40- 90 km wide with rounded shapes of top without pronounced ridge. In mountain peaks there is a lack of vegetation and they reach the height of 2000-2300 meters above sea level. The most popular peak of the ridge is Cherskiy Peak (2090 meters above the sea level).
The ridge is located to the south of Lake Baikal. Despite its proximity to the Sayan Mountains, Khamar-Daban is another mountain, one of the oldest on the planet.
Mountains of the ridge steeps to Lake Baikal and appears to be a natural barrier to the air flow transported through Baikal. There are more precipitations than in adjacent places of Siberia. The humid climate contributes to the diversity of the mountain taiga vegetation. Forests are mainly coniferous. At high altitudes, the alpine meadows are combined with areas of cedar. There are poplar relict forest.
In Hamar-Daban there are many different lakes. One of the largest and most popular is Sobolinoye lake. The smaller lakes are Patovoe Lake and Chertovo Lake.
Khamar-Daban is very popular among tourists, every year it is visited by thousands of people because of the easy availability of these mountains and along the Khamar-Daban there is the railroad.
