One of the oldest cities in the territory of Nizhny Novgorod oblast is Gorodets, the only city in Nizhny Novgorod oblast that has a museum quarter. It is a complex of wooden buildings dedicated to the history of wooden architecture of Nizhny Novgorod oblast during the period of the XVI-XIX centuries. It causes a range of assosiations: one will see a luxurious princeling palace, a wooden house of a wealthy merchant while for the other it seems to be the whole city, which buildings are connected by passages. It includes the architectural details of wooden houses of the XVI-XIX centuries. The interior of palaces is as good as its exterior. There are a few exhibits: works of Old Russian pictorial art; goods of Gorodets painting; golden embroidery; guipure embroidery; wood carving; pottery; and Zhbannikovsk pennywhistle.

Workshops are conducted in an extremely interesting way. The special color is provided by the fact that workshops are held within the walls of the wooden palace. One can try to work with different materials such as clay, wood, vine, and tissue.
