River Shuya

The Shuya River is a river in the Republic of Karelia in Russia. The length of the river is 194 km. The area of its basin is 10,100 km². The Shuya flows out of Lake Suoyarvi and flows through Lake Logmozero into Lake Onega. It freezes up in November - January and stays icebound until April - first half of May.

On Shuya, Ignoylinskaya HPP was built. Its power is small, only about 2.7 MW. It is located near the village of Ignoyla. In 2007, a four-step course was developed for the representatives of salmon so that they could move freely to spawning grounds.
There are two versions of the origin of the name of the river. According to one of them, the name of the reservoir was due to the Karelian word "deep". And according to another version - from the Old Slavonic "left". In the past, this river flowed through the territory of Finland, and the locals called it marsh.
Shuya is a river that originates from Lake Suojärvi. Then it flows through the other two - Shotozero and Vagatozero. The mouth is the pond of Logmozero, which is connected with Onega. Its main tributaries include 4 left and 8 right rivers. Left-hand: Chalna, Kutizhma, Syapsy, Torasjoki. Right-sided - Vilga, Norik, Svyatreka, etc.
Climatic features The weather conditions in this region are very volatile. In summer, the air temperature does not exceed +30 ° C, humidity is high, accompanied by a large amount of precipitation. The heat is fixed for a short time. The duration of such a period lasts not more than one month. In winter, a lot of snow falls, but there is no severe frost. In Karelia, rains often go, sometimes even several days in a row. And then the temperature drops to +15 ° C, after which the water in the river becomes cold - unsuitable for bathing.
The water itself is mostly dark, resembling tea in a shade. But this does not mean that it is dirty - quite the contrary, even very clean. A characteristic dark color is obtained because of peat bogs, which are surrounded by a river. The water quality is soft, has a small mineral content.
Shuya is a river in which there is not a very rich underwater world. However, fishermen manage to catch a pike or perch. The river bed became a favorite place for salmon. It is here that this species of fish spawns. In the coastal forests in the summer grow cloudberry, blueberries, lingonberries and mushrooms (white, boletus, podberezoviki). Therefore, here for the harvest come local residents or holidaymakers. However, during hikes in the forest you need to be extremely careful, as vipers can get caught.
