Alexander Ghindin (Piano)

Alexander Ghindin has been unanimously acclaimed by critics and music lovers as one of the most talented and original pianists of the present day. “Alexander Ghindin is not just a virtuoso, of which there are few on the stage today. He is also a true personality, a poet and a singer of the piano, an inspired lyricist and dramatist who has a subtle feel for the music and conveys the composers’ ideas” (Music Review, 2008).

The pianist was born in 1977 in Moscow. He attended the Stasov Children’s School of Music No 36 (class of K. I. Liburkina) and then the Central School of Music of the Moscow Conservatoire (class of Professor M. S. Voskresensky), from which he graduated in 1994. It was also from Voskresensky’s class at the Moscow Conservatoire that he graduated with distinction in 1999, and in the same year he joined the Moscow State Philharmonic as a soloist.

Before entering the Conservatoire in 1994, at the age of seventeen he became the youngest-ever laureate of the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, and is quickly establishing himself as one of the most sought-after pianists of his generation. Later he gained in Second prize at the International Queen Elisabeth Piano Competition in Brussels in 1999. These successes assisted the start of the pianist’s extremely intensive recital activities.

In 2007 he was a First prize-winner at the International Piano Competition in Cleveland (USA) and was engaged for over fifty concerts in the USA. According to critics, he “made a staggering impression on the audience, demonstrating such a high level of mastery that makes every one of his performances special and unforgettable.” (Art and Life). In July 2010 Alexander Ghindin won First prize at the International Piano Competition of Santa Catarina (Florianуpolis, Brazil).

In 2000 Alexander Ghindin together with Nikolai Petrov (b.1943-d.2011) founded a Piano Duo. The long-lasting artistic cooperation of the pianists, who belong to different generations, has brought wonderful results. In the subsequent 11 years were establish many programs, including concertos for two pianos and orchestra. The entire repertoire of the duo consists for the most part of rare masterpieces, though it by no means excludes well-known compositions. The musicians have performed over 100 concerts in numerous Russian cities and abroad, recorded six CDs. Concert activities of the Duo was of a great importance for Russian culture during those years.

In 2001 Ondine records has released the world premiиre recording of the original version of Sergei Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 1 and 4 performed by Alexander Ghindin together with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy.

Alexander Ghindin is a frequent jury member of such competition as the Nutcracker Young Performers’ International TV Competition (2004, 2006, 2009 and 2011); First Russian Music Competition (Moscow, 2010); International Piano Competition in Cleveland (USA, 2011) and others.

Since 2006, A. Ghindin has been Artistic Director of his own concert series at one of Russias most distinguished concert venues, the Svetlanov Hall of the Moscow International Performing Arts Center, where he has performed the unique programs, such as: The recital of Four Pianos, Duo Program for Piano and Organ, American music for Two Pianos, including prepared instruments and others.

That same year as part of the prestigious Osaka Festival Alexander Ghindin gave a series of concerts with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and performed at Suntory Hall.

In 2006 he was awarded the title of Honoured Artist of Russia.

In 2007 he was named “Person of the Year” according to the Music Review.

In 2008 Alexander Ghindin ran the unique Quartet of Pianos project. He invited renowned musicians from France, the USA, Greece, the Netherlands, Turkey and Russia to take part in the Quartet.
