Pelageya Kurennaya has been a prize-winner at international competitions, receiving a diploma at the Elena Obraztsova International Competition of Young Vocalists (St Petersburg, 2008); prize-winner at the VI Moscow Festival-Competition of Opera Singing Silver Voice (2nd prize, 2009), prize-winner at the Fyodor Chaliapin Festival in Moscow (2009), prize-winner at the Pietro Argento International Music Competition in Bari, Italy (3rd prize, 2011), prize-winner at the International Magda Olivero Opera Singers’ Competition (Milan, 2013), prize-winner at the International Competition Three Centuries of Classical Romance (St Petersburg, 2014) and recipient of the Grand-Prix at the International Competition Romansiada (Moscow, 2013).
In October 2014, Pelageya Kurennaya made her debut in the role of Prilepa in the opera The Queen of Spades with maestro Mariss Jansons at the Gasteig Cultural Centre in Munich and at the Luxembourg Philharmonie. In May 2015 she debuted in the role of Masha in the opera The Queen of Spades with maestro Valery Gergiev at the new Mariinsky Theatre. She also made her operatic debut at the St Petersburg Conservatoire Opera and Ballet Theatre.
Repertoire includes the roles of First Lady and Belinda in Dido and Aeneas by Purcell, Barbarina and Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro by Mozart, Marfa in The Tsar’s Bride by Rimsky-Korsakov, Brigitta in Tchaikovsky’s one-act Iolanta and Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia.
She is currently rehearsing the roles of Gilda in Rigoletto (Verdi), Violetta in La traviata (Verdi), Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor (Donizetti), Musetta in La Bohème (Puccini) and Oscar in Un ballo in maschera (Verdi). Pelageya is a 4th year student of the Rimsky-Korsakov St Petersburg State Conservatoire, class of Professor Tamara Novichenko, Honoured Artist of Russia (who also taught Anna Netrebko).
She has also participated in master-classes conducted by Elena Obraztsova, Vladimir Chernov and Diana Zola as well as the Los Angeles Opera’s Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program.
