        Recipient of an honorary diploma at the Prague Quadrennial international theatre design exhibition in 1999. Has received the prestigious Evening Standard theatre prize from London critics and journalists several times: in 1995 for designing King Arthur at the Royal Opera, Covent Garden (nominated "For best achievement in opera"); in 2001 for the sets for The Tempest and Plato at the Almeida Theatre; and in 2004 for The False Servant, a staging of Marivauxґ Les fausses confidences at the UKґs National Theatre (nominated as "Best production designer of the year"). 

Born in Glamorgan. Has taken part in projects run by Londonґs Riverside Studio. Frequently works with musical theatres throughout the world. Productions he has designed include: Die Zauberflцte (Salzburg Festival), Mitridate, rи di Ponto, Falstaff, I masnadieri (Royal Opera, Covent Garden), King Arthur (Royal Opera, Covent Garden, Thйвtre du Chвtelet), Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, Moses and Aaron, Il trovatore (Metropolitan Opera), Pellйas et Mйlisande, Lulu, The Turn of the Screw (Glyndebourne Festival), Peter Grimes, Parsifal (Opйra Bastille), Don Carlo (Sydney Opera House), Rigoletto (Madridґs Teatro Real), Thais (Chicago Lyric Opera), Lґincoronazione di Poppea (Bolognaґs Teatro Comunale), Kбtґa Kabanovб, Lucius Sulla (Santa Fe Opera), La traviata, Anna Bolena (Arena di Verona) and Mefistofele (Nederlandse Opera). At La Scala in Milan he has designed a production of the ballet Giselle, danced by Sylvie Guillem. Has also worked with drama theatres, designing Shakespeareґs Richard II, Coriolanus, The Tempest and King Lear (Almeida Theatre, directed by Jonathan Kent). 
Paul Brown worked on the films Angels and Insects (1996), for which he received an Oscar nomination as best costume designer, and Philip Haasґ Up at the Villa (2000). Together with Jonathan Kent he has staged several musicals on Broadway, among them Man of La Mancha. 

Honorary member of the Welsh College of Music and Drama. In the 2005-2006 season he made his Moscow debut at the Bolshoi Theatre as production designer of the opera Die Zauberflцte (directed by Graham Vick).
