Russian State Pushkin Academy Drama Theater (Alexandrinsky Theatre) (established 1756), Saint Petersburg
Duration: 2 hours 00 minutes
World premiere: The Alexandrinsky Theater, May 24, 2016

The ballet was composed to the music of PI Tchaikovsky. The premiere will take place shortly before the anniversary of Boris Eifman, who on July 22 will celebrate his 70th birthday.
PI Tchaikovsky is perhaps the most beloved composer of Eifman. His music choreographer put such landmark productions as "The Idiot" (1980), "Red Giselle" (1997), "Anna Karenina" (2005) and "Eugene Onegin" (2009).
Separately it is necessary to note the ballet "Tchaikovsky", released in 1993 and with consistent success demonstrated around the world. In this performance, Eifman actually managed to materialize on the stage the immortal music of Pyotr Ilyich, to embody the symphony of passions in plastic. The emergence of "Tchaikovsky" is associated with the start of the newest stage in the creative life of the St. Petersburg State Academic Ballet Theater. It was in the early 1990s that Boris Eifman focuses on creating large-scale choreographic psychodrames and affirms this aesthetic form as the main one for himself and his troupe. Today, he offers a new, original plastic expression, corresponding to the contemporary artistic and technological capabilities of the ballet theater.
"Turning over for many years to the music of Tchaikovsky, I realized how profound, bottomless the world of the composer. I realized the variety of topics related to his work, his psychic essence, his relationships with his loved ones. All this has not been sufficiently investigated by me before. I wanted to create a work in which I could go deeper into the element of Tchaikovsky's creative torment, "Eifman says.
The choreographic text of the new production, perfectly harmonizing emotionally and dramatically with the music of the composer, differs in variety and extremely accurately conveys the inner experiences of the characters. Ingenuity plastic language allowed Boris Eifman insightfully explore the inner personality split that was experienced painfully Tchaikovsky, it has become a source of unbearable mental suffering and predestined tragic confessional sound of his works.
The basis of the narrative fabric of the ballet is the memories of a dying composer filled with phantasmagoria. Before the eyes of the haggard Tchaikovsky, his whole life is swept by - like a feverish dying vision. Developing the principle of the multiplicity of the characters, their disintegration into a whole gallery of images, Eifman deliberately complicates the design of the play and the structure of the characters. Allusions to the great works of the composer - the ballet "The Nutcracker" and "Swan Lake" - merge with the fantasies of the opera "Eugene Onegin" and "The Queen of Spades." Thus, the composer's Double, the personification of his complex and tragic nature, appears before the audience in the images of Rothbart, Drosselmeyer, Onegin and Herman. Patroness Tchaikovsky Nadezhda von Mekk turns into ballet then the Queen of Spades, the evil fairy Carabos. The mystery of the birth of imperishable masterpieces appearing as if against the world of everyday life with its low vanity is in the center of attention of the think-choreographer and becomes the key philosophical problem of the play.
Original scenery of the ballet "Tchaikovsky. PRO et CONTRA »created by artist Zinovy Margolin. The author of the costumes was Olga Shaishmelashvili. Both theatrical artists had previously successfully collaborated successfully with the choreographer and his troupe. The lighting score was prepared by Alexander Sivaev in co-authorship with Boris Eifman. The main roles in the ballet performed by the leading soloists, winners of the Russian President's Prize and the Russian Government Award "Golden Mask" and "Golden Soffit" Honored Artist of Russia Oleg Gabyshev Sergei Volobuev Love Andreeva Maria Abashova and others.
