The State Chamber Orchestra of Jazz Music named after Oleg Lundstrem has a unique history. In 2014, he celebrated his 80th anniversary, confirming the status of the most "long-playing" big-band in the world. This fact is recorded in the Russian Guinness Book of Records. In 1934, nine young Russian musicians living in Harbin decided to compile their jazz orchestra. The leader was chosen 18-year-old beginner jazzman Oleg Lundstrem. Conquering Harbin, five years later the orchestra moved to Shanghai, where it immediately gained immense popularity not only among the local population, but also a large number of Europeans and Americans who lived then in China. The orchestra worked in the best halls, including Russian and Soviet songs in jazz arrangements. In 1947, the musicians of the orchestra, by the time 18 people, appealed to the USSR embassy to return to their homeland. The permanent place of residence and work of the orchestra was Kazan, many went to study at the Kazan Conservatory. Despite the fact that attitude to jazz at that time in the USSR as a whole was negative, the orchestra regularly performed with concerts, recorded on the radio.

On October 1, 1956, after the creation of a concert variety orchestra in the VGKO (later the Russian Federal Space Agency) system, Oleg Lundstrem moved to Moscow. Since that moment a great concert tour began, which continued in the most complicated perestroika and post-perestroika years.
In November 1998 the band became the first jazz orchestra to perform at the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. The audience was presented with a number of interesting projects in creative cooperation with the best musicians not only of jazz but also classical school: pianist Nikolai Petrov, opera singer Lyubov Kazarnovskaya, outstanding jazz singer Deborah Brown.
In 2003-2006, the main conductor of the orchestra was the outstanding musician Georgiy Garanyan. In 2007, the collective was headed by the famous jazz pianist and band leader Boris Frumkin. Under his leadership, the orchestra continues the traditions of its founder, Oleg Lundstrem, who once said: "As for the creed of our orchestra, it remains the same: we are faithful to jazz, we strive to make jazz an important component of a person's spiritual life."
Over the years of its existence, the Chamber Jazz Orchestra named after O. Lundstrem traveled more than 500 cities of the USSR, Russia and dozens abroad, gave more than 10,000 concerts. Hundreds of thousands of spectators attended concerts, millions listened to them on the radio and watched on television. Together with Melodiya studio, in addition to a number of records of popular dance music, 10 long-playing plates of jazz music were recorded, both with pieces by domestic composers, and with jazz classics in arrangements of the orchestra, several compact discs.
The orchestra of Oleg Lundstrem is an invariable participant of major international jazz festivals: Tallinn 67, Jazz Jamboree 72 in Warsaw, Prague 78 and Prague 86, Sofia 86, Jazz at Duktown 88 in the Netherlands, the USSR Art Festival in India (1988), Grenoble-90 in France, the Ellington Memorial Festival in Washington, USA (1991), Big Band Festival in Santa Barbara, USA (1998), Jazz Rally- 2007 "in Dusseldorf, Russian festivals" Usadba-Jazz "," Jazz Province "," Musical Autumn in Tver ", Black Sea in Sochi and many others. Significant landmarks of the orchestra's tour activities in the 2000s were the tour of China (2003), where the orchestra led by Oleg Lundstrem began his brilliant career; performances in Israel (2004) at the first festival dedicated to the memory of Leonid Utyosov; Participation in the Day of Russia at the "Slavonic Bazaar" in Vitebsk (2007), Ukraine, Germany, Moldova, India, Moscow Days in Switzerland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.
With the orchestra there were many famous guests who are members of the world jazz elite. Here remarkable musicians started their career: Nikolai Kapustin, Georgy Garanyan, Igor Butman, Gennady Holstein, Alexei Zubov, Konstantin Nosov, Konstantin Bakholdin, Vagif Sadikhov, Roman Kunsman, Nikolai Panov and many other outstanding jazzmen, and also such vocalists who later became domestic stars variety, such as Valentina Dvoryaninova, Maya Kristalinskaya, Alla Pugacheva, Irina Ponarovskaya, Irina Otiyeva, Valery Obodzinsky ... Today, the orchestra is played by many young musicians, whom jazz critics call the hope of domestic jazz.
"I think I gave the main orchestra a motivation," says team leader Boris Frumkin. - And the only motivation for a jazz musician, who is always a soloist by nature, but plays in a large orchestra, is the disclosure of his creative potential. I try my best to give the musicians of the orchestra the opportunity to speak on stage. This is the best opportunity to satisfy their creative ambitions. "

Boris Frumkin is a pianist, arranger, conductor and composer. He was born in 1944 in the family of a musician. His father - a jazz trumpeter Mikhail Frumkin - in the 1930s he played in the orchestra with A. Tsfasman, and from the end of the 40s he directed his own jazz orchestra. Although Boris received a classical music education in the Central Music School and partly in the Moscow Conservatory, his heart tended more towards jazz. The young pianist's idols were more "classical" Dave Brubeck, Jerry Mulligan, Glenn Miller's Orchestra. "But when I heard The Jazz Messengers under the direction of Art Blakey, this music turned my mind around!", Recalls the artist.
After graduation and service in the army B. Frumkin began his musical career in the orchestra of the All-Union Radio and Central Television under the leadership of Vadim Ludvikovsky. One of the highest achievements of the Melody Ensemble was the participation in the unique joint Soviet-American project - the production of the musical by Duke Ellington's music "Sophisticated lady" (1980). The show has withstood a total of 70 concerts in Russia and more than 50 at the Opera-House of the Kennedy Center in Washington. The pianist and conductor of this show was B. Frumkin.
