The State Academic Russian Folk Choir named after ME Pyatnitsky was founded in 1911 by Mitrofan Efimovich Pyatnitsky, an outstanding researcher, collector and propagandist of Russian folk art, who first showed the traditional Russian song in the form in which it was performed by the people for centuries. Looking for talented folk singers, he sought to acquaint the wide circles of the city public with their inspired skill, to give the artistic value of the Russian folk song.
The first performance of the choir took place on March 2, 1911 on the small stage of the Noble Assembly of Moscow. This concert was highly appreciated by S. Rachmaninov, F. Shalyapin, I. Bunin. After the enthusiastic publications in the periodicals of those years, the popularity of the choir increased year by year. In 1918, according to the decree of VI Lenin, all participants of the peasant chorus were transported to Moscow. In the 1920's. The collective has already toured in many regions of the country.
After the death in 1927 of ME Pyatnitsky, who left more than 400 collected songs as his creative heritage, PM Kazmin, a folklorist, the People's Artist of the RSFSR, a laureate of State Prizes, leads the choir. In the same year the choir receives the name of ME Pyatnitsky.
In 1929, with the commencement of collectivization against the Chorus, a campaign was launched under the slogan "We do not need a choir with the songs of a kulak village. New village - new songs. " The "crisis" allowed the arrival in 1931 of a talented composer, People's Artist of the USSR VG Zakharov, who headed the collective until 1956. The founder and head of the dance group for 60 years was the People's Artist of the USSR TA Ustinova. The founder of the orchestra group was the People's Artist of the RSFSR V. V. Khvatov.
During the Great Patriotic War the Pyotnitsky Choir performed in the front concert brigades, and the song of Vladimir Zakharov in the words of Mikhail Isakovsky "Oh, my fogs" became the anthem of the partisan movement.
