State Choreographic Ensemble the Beryozka

The world-famous State Academic Choreographic Ensemble "Berezka" was created in 1948 by the outstanding choreographer of the XX century Nadezhda Sergeevna Nadezhdina. A man of the highest culture and erudition, she knew well what riches lurk in the work of the Russian people, and she saw it through the eyes of the poet. She instilled the classical dance with the poetry of an ancient dance, connected the past with the present. The girlish song compiled by her on the theme of the Russian folk song "Berezonya stood in the field" has fascinated spectators for 69 years with her outlandish, "floating" step, as if a whole birch grove suddenly came to life, moved and appeared in a solemnly grand parade. At the same time, the viewer gets the impression that the girls are standing still, and the scene under them rotates.
Soon, the dance that everyone liked gave the name to the ensemble, in which N. S. Nadezhdina fulfilled her cherished dream - she devoted herself to creating scenic works on a folk basis. The firm step "Birches" was later used in many ensemble ensembles. And, according to the press, during the years of concert activity, the rounds of the ensemble "Birch" have passed their "floating" step distance exceeding the length of the equator.
The "Birch" immediately came to popularity. The tour of the ensemble was accompanied by a triumphant success and brought the collective world recognition. N. Nadezhdina's creations enthusiastically applauded on all continents of the planet. During the Cold War, the foreign press wrote about the ensemble's performances as a "fiery sensation" and testified that the art of "Birch", human and spiritual, "arouses kind feelings and faith in brotherhood between people." The World Peace Council in 1959 awarded the "Berezka" Gold Medal for its contribution to strengthening friendship between nations.
Each performance of the ensemble is of great importance. Combining high professionalism with boundless love for the Motherland, his work subtly conveys the life and nature of the Russian people, fills the consciousness of the young generation with deep spirituality, the unfading beauty of Russian nature, shapes feelings of love and gratitude towards the older generation, brings young people to great sources, the treasury of the national culture and art.
People's Artist of the USSR, laureate of the State Prize of the USSR, Hero of Socialist Labor N. S. Nadezhdin enthusiastically led her offspring for more than 30 years, until the last days of her life. Today, the ensemble proudly bears the name of its creator, and Nadezhda's masterpieces still occupy a central place in the repertoire of the collective. Since 1980, the artistic director of the ensemble is the People's Artist of the USSR, Ukraine, the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania, Professor, Academician M. Koltsov. The leading soloist of the ensemble became a worthy successor to N. S. Nadezhdina. It not only preserved, but also multiplied the creative heritage of the founder of the ensemble.
