Synopsis
The action takes place in 1865 in the imaginary city of Roulettenburg, near the Spa.
In the resort town of Roulettenburg, famous for its gambling houses, fate brought the retired General, Pauline - his stepdaughter, Alexey Ivanovich - the teacher of his children, the Marquise, Mr. Astley and the lady of the half-light Mademoiselle Blanche.
The general lost his fortune to roulette and was in debt with the Marquis. In addition, the charms of Mademoiselle Blanche completely turned his head. All hopes the General and his friends are laying on the state of the rich Moscow grandmother and are eagerly awaiting the news of her death. But instead of the telegram, Babulenka is herself, and soberly assessing the situation, refuses the General in the inheritance. Intrigued by tales of roulette, she decides to see first hand what it is. Leaving Babulenka gambling house, losing almost everything that it had.
The only way out of a desperate situation, the General sees in the marriage of his stepdaughter with the Marquis. But Pauline, after experiencing the passion of the Marquis, understands now all the meanness of this man, and the fact that she owes him a large sum makes her dependence even more painful. Alexei Ivanovich promises Polina to get money. In the gambling house he is fantastically lucky: he breaks the bank - two hundred thousand francs. However, Polina, feeling that this money is not the gift of a man in love, but the player's winnings, throws them to Alexei Ivanovich in the face.
