Communist Walking Tour of St Petersburg (2 hours)

Discover the hidden pages of the history of Soviet Leningrad during an evening walking tour. In this communist tour you will learn about the most important events of the communist past of St. Petersburg. You will see important sights of the Soviet era, such as the former KGB building (known as The Big House), a cafe of the Soviet era, the Field of Mars and the legendary cruiser Aurora.
  • 2-hour walking tour of the communist sites of St. Petersburg
  • Learn about the October Revolution and other significant events in the communist history of the city
  • Look at the balcony of the Museum of Political History of Russia, from which Lenin made his speeches
  • See the cafe of the Soviet era, the former KGB building, and the restored Aurora battleship
  • Admire the Peter and Paul Fortress, one of the few places left relatively unscathed by the communists
Meet your guide in the center of St. Petersburg on Lenin Square, and then go on your communist tour. In 1917, Russia became the center of world history. The strikes of the cruiser Aurora heralded the beginning of a new era. During the October Revolution leftist revolutionaries led by Bolshevik Party leader Vladimir Lenin launched a nearly bloodless coup d'état against the Duma's provisional government. The Bolsheviks would later become the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, their rule lasted more than 70 years. You will see the places where the revolution was born.
Look at the building, known locally as Bolshoy Dom (the Big House). Since 1932, the NKVD department is located in the buildings, and later the KGB department also moved here. The big house has become an ominous symbol of Stalinist repression. Thousands of people of Leningrad passed through his offices, many of them were awaiting execution.

Stop for photos near the Aurora ship. In 1917 the Aurora's crew took an active part in the February and October revolutionary activities and the Civil War. On 25 October 1917 a blank shot from her forecastle gun signaled the start of the assault on the Winter Palace, which was to be the beginning of the October Revolution.

Take a walk through the Field of Mars, in 1917 the remains of those who died during the February Revolution were ceremonially buried here. During the siege of Leningrad, the Field of Mars turned into a vegetable garden. Visit a communist-style café, as well as Cross Prison, which used to hold political prisoners and Solovetsky Stone, a monument to victims of political suppression in the Soviet Union.

See Peter and Paul Fortress, which was an important strategic place during the communist revolution with the Petrograd Military and Revolutionary Committee main office here making it the place from where the command for the storming the Winter Palace was given. Then admire the balcony of the Museum of Political History of Russia, from which Lenin made his speeches.

After two hours of exploring the communist places of St. Petersburg, return to the starting point where your tour ends.

Reviews

We wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed both of our tours with your guide, Igor. We had expected the normal tourist style tours which are usually quite frothy and lightweight, although fun. What we experienced were 2 more informative, educational and interesting evenings. We also saw sites that we had not previously come across in guidebooks or on internet searches. For example miniature St Petersburg and Smolny Convent. Thank you again.
