Transfiguration Church

The Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord is located on the island of Kizhi, on the Onega Lake, to the north-east of St. Petersburg. The main feature of the structure is that the church is entirely made of wood, and no nails were used during the construction!

According to some information, the church was laid in the end of the XVI century, but because of the fire caused by lightning, it was completely destroyed. The church, which we see today, was built in 1714. The structure has a peculiar appearance. Numerous domes in the shape of bulbs give the church a fabulous look. Being near the church, it seems that he was in the ancient Russian epic!

The Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord is built in the best traditions of Russian carpentry. It seems incredible, but to build such a large-scale construction, whose height reaches 37 meters, it did not take a single nail! Only the "scales" on the share of the domes were caught with small nails! Unfortunately, the names of the masters who built the amazing church, erased the time.

The tree is considered quite a difficult material for the construction of buildings of complex shapes, but Kizhi masters were real experts in their field. Before them was set a goal to build a temple of a rounded shape. For this Kizhi masters chose the octagon as the main figure in the construction.

When the main part of the temple was ready, the builders began work on the side tiers, oriented around the world. As a result, the overall structure of the church is somewhat like a cross.

There are three octuplets in the building. They are all bunk and each slightly lower than the previous one. This arrangement gives the structure of the shape of the pyramid. The corners of the main octagon are decorated with barrels and heads. One can not help noting the generosity of the parishioners of that time, since it was on their donations that the construction of the temple was conducted. The temple itself is considered a summer temple, and in the winter it is not served.

The iconostasis of the Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord was considered one of the largest among the temples of the Olonets province. The height of the iconostasis reaches 8 meters, and the length is more than 25 meters. In total, there are 101 icons in the iconostasis, and it itself is decorated with numerous decorative elements!

The Church of the Transfiguration of Our Lord in Kizhi is a monument of federal significance and a part of the cultural heritage of the Russian Federation.
