The River Port was built in 1980, much later than the main Embankment ensemble. Today it is Europe’s largest riverboat terminal (length 296 m/917 ft, width 36 m/111 ft and height 47 m/146 ft), catering for river traffic including cruise ships and cargo boats.

Volgograd is the largest transport hub in the South of Russia. Here the water, railway, road and air routes converge. The five-beam radial configuration of transit freight traffic with the center in Volgograd provides rail transportation in the following directions: the northern direction provides the railway communication of the Volgograd region with the large industrial centers of the Volga region: Saratov, Samara, Ulyanovsk and Kazan; the north-western direction connects Volgograd with Moscow, the industrial centers of the Central Black Earth and Central Economic Regions; the western direction connects the region with Donetsk-Pridneprovsky district and its coal, metallurgical, machine-building and chemical enterprises; the south-western direction opens the way to Novorossiysk, Rostov-on-Don and other centers of the North Caucasus region; the south-eastern direction leads to Astrakhan and further to Kazakhstan and Central Asia.
