Luciano Di Martino (Conductor)

The Italian-German Luciano Di Martino is currently a permanent Guest Conductor of the Sofia Classic FM Radio Symphony Orchestra. He made a highly successful debut in 2008 at the Hamburg Staatsoper, where he continues to appear regularly as a Guest Conductor.

He studied orchestral conducting at the Hamburg University of Music and Drama with Klauspeter Seibel and Irving Beckmann, as well in Siena at the Accademia Chigiana, attending international master classes with Professor Ilya Musin, Valery Gergiev and Myung-Whun Chung.

Di Martino began his career in 1996 with the Hamburg Symphonic Orchestra, conducting a Swedish symphony programme dedicated to the composers Franz Berwald, Lars-Erik Larsson and Hugo Alfvйn.

He continues as Guest Conductor of the National Opera in Riga, the Symphony Orchestras of Solingen, Thessalonica, Bulgarian National Radio Orchestra, the Sofia Festival Orchestra, the Sofia Soloists and the Philharmonic Orchestras of Katovice, Macerata and Baden-Baden.

From 2000 to 2004 he was Music Director of the Bulgarian State Opera in Stara Zagora. There followed engagements at international operatic festivals, among them the Bellinzona Opera Festival, the Villa Adriana Opera Festival, the Novosibirsk Christmas Festival, the Worcester Music Festival, the Sofia New Years Music Festival and performances at the Grosses Festspielhaus during the Culture Weeks in Salzburg.

Di Martino conducts operas in New York, Minneapolis, Wilmington, New Brunswick, Lisbon, Granada and Strasbourg.

With the Novosibirsk Philharmonic Orchestra he has conducted many demanding symphony programmes dedicated to Mahler and Shostakovich, as well Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du printemps.

Di Martino is a versatile conductor and is also actively involved in contemporary symphony music; he has premiered works by Maximilian Kreuz, Christos Samaras and Fulvio Delli Pizzi.

Live television broadcasts include gala concerts with some of the world’s most distinguished performers, among them Ghena Dimitrova, Anna Tomowa-Sintow and Kaludi Kaludov, as well symphony concerts with stars including Uto Ughi, Maxim Vengerov, Pepe Romero and Leticia Moreno.

He also works with talented young performers such as Svetlin Roussev, Luigi Piovano, Dag Jensen and Anton Barakhovsky.

In 2004 he conducted Boris Christoff’s anniversary concert at the Sofia National Opera and in 2006 came Verdi’s Messa da Requiem in memory of Ghena Dimitrova.
