Mikhail Agrest (Conductor)

Born in Leningrad. Began his music training as a violinist at the Leningrad Conservatoire School for Gifted Children. Moved to the USA with his family in 1989 and went on to earn a bachelorґs degree in violin performance with Josef Gingold at the Indiana University School of Music. He returned to St Petersburg for post-graduate studies in conducting with Ilya Musin and Mariss Jansons at the St Petersburg State Conservatoire. In the summers of 2000 and 2001, he was a fellow at the Aspen Music Festivalґs American Academy of Conducting where he studied with David Zinman. Born in Leningrad. Has been with the Mariinsky Theatre since 2001, where he conducts the operas La Boheme, La Cleopatra, Cosi fan tutte, Lucia di Lammermoor, Oedipus Rex, The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevronia, Sadko, A Life for the Tsar, Le Rossignol and the ballets The Firebird, Petrouchka, Prodigal Son, Cinderella, Apollo, Jewels, Manon, Le Sacre du printemps, Romeo and Juliet, Le Corsaire, Swan Lake, Giselle, La Sylphide, The Nutcracker, La Valse and The Four Temperaments. In 2002, he received a nomination for the Golden Sophit, St Petersburg?s highest theatre prize, in the category "best work by a conductor" for new productions of Cinderella, Prodigal Son and Cosi fan tutte.
On May 28th 2003, he conducted the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra with Valery Gergiev in the concert dedicated to St Petersburg?s tercentenary on Palace Square. The concert was broadcast live on two national television channels.
He has performed with the Mariinsky Theatre in Austria, Switzerland, Germany, France, the USA, the UK and Finland and has given concerts with orchestras in Russia, Ukraine, Romania, Italy, Hong Kong and the USA. Since 2000, he has been Music Director of the PI Chamber Orchestra in South Carolina.
Was awarded second prize at the A. Pedrotti International Conducting Competition (Italy, 2001) and third prize at the Mitropoulos Conducting Competition (2002).
In July 2003, he made his Metropolitan Opera debut with Rimsky-Korsakov?s The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevronia and his Covent Garden debut with Le Sacre du printemps and Les Noces.
