Theatre Square

The 350-year-old square of Krasnoyarsk, Theater Square, decorated with bronze lions, sphinxes, is with good reason called the most beautiful square in Krasnoyarsk. This is a favorite place of cultural rest of the townspeople: the Opera and Ballet Theatre, two beautiful fountains and a high clock tower, or as it is called by the locals - Krasnoyarsk Big Ben-are on the square.

Theatre Square has two levels: there is a light and music fountain on the lower level. It's a real theater of water streams! It was installed there in 2001, and has since been considered one of the most beautiful sights of the city. You can see the water dance to classical music in the warm season, from May to October. In winter, Krasnoyarsk’s residents build big ice town on the lower level and decorate it with a 50-foot Christmas tree, the highest in Russia! The upper level is where city holidays are held. The “Rivers of Siberia” cascade fountain, by artisans from Krasnoyarsk, is also on Theater Square. At its center is the massive sculpture Yenisei Batyushka, (or Father Yenisei) in which the Siberian rivers Mana, Biryusa, Tunguska, Khatanga, Bazaikha and Kacha merge, sparkling and playing with water glare. Local girls, natives of Krasnoyarsk, posed for the artists for each of the statues of the rivers. The sculptures reflect the character of the tributaries of the Yenisei, their uniqueness and landscape features. Yenisei is holding a sailing boat, symbolizing Siberian shipping.
