Freedom Square

Freedom Square is one of the main squares of the city. It is located in the historical center of Kazan in Vakhitovsky district. Previously, it was called Theatrical, a modern name exists since 1924.

In Soviet times parades, rallies, demonstrations were held in the square. In the center of the square is a monument to Lenin, who studied for several months at Kazan University, but was expelled after a student meeting. On the bas-relief of the monument is just a student meeting.

Near the monument is the Musa Jamil Theater. Earlier in its place was the Derzhavinsky garden, in which was erected a monument to Derzhavin, and then a square with a monument to Kutuzov. To the left of Lenin is the Bolshoi Concert Hall. Salih Saidashev. Also on the square is the government building of Tatarstan. Prior to the beginning of the 20th century, the main city theater was located on the site of the square.

Freedom Square is of great importance in the life of Kazan. Apart from a large number of architectural and historical monuments, there are also institutions on it that play an important role in the culture of not only the city, but the entire republic.
