The Moscow State Academic Symphony Orchestra (MGASO) was founded in 1943 by the Government of the USSR and is one of the oldest symphony orchestras in Russia.
The first chief conductor of the ensemble was the conductor of the Bolshoi Theater People's Artist of the USSR Lev Shteinberg. He headed the orchestra until the end of his life (1945). Then the leadership of MGASO was carried out by such renowned Soviet musicians as Nikolai Anosov (1945-1950), Leo Ginzburg (1950-1954), Mikhail Terian (1954-1960), Veronika Dudarova (1960-1989). Thanks to their cooperation with them, the orchestra became one of the best symphony ensembles in the country, but was known primarily for the performances of Russian and Soviet classics, including the premieres of S. Prokofiev, N. Myaskovsky, D. D. Shostakovich, R. M. Glière.
A new era in the history of MGASO began under the leadership of Pavel Kogan. Maestro took the post of artistic director and chief conductor of the orchestra in 1989 and immediately reformed the group's repertoire, enriching it with works of European and American musical literature.
The visiting card of the orchestra was the grandiose monographic cycles of complete collections of symphonic compositions by the greatest composers of I. Brahms, L. van Beethoven, F. Schubert, R. Schumann, R. Strauss, F. Mendelssohn, G. Mahler, A. Bruckner, J. Sibelius, A. Dvorak, P. I. Tchaikovsky, A. K. Glazunov, S. V. Rachmaninov, S. C. Prokofiev, D. D. Shostakovich, A. N. Scriabin, G. Berlioz, C. Debussy, M. Ravel. The large-scale programs of the collective consist of symphonic, opera and vocal-symphonic classics, works by contemporary composers, a lot of forgotten and unfamiliar works.
Thanks to the variety of programs and the invariably high level of their performance, MGAIC deserved the respect and love of listeners in their country and abroad. The orchestra annually gives concerts in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory and the PI Tchaikovsky Concert Hall, including in the framework of popular personal and mixed subscription cycles. The group regularly performs in the Great Hall of the St. Petersburg Academic Philharmonic named after D. D. Shostakovich and on the stages of other cities of Russia, and also conducts a tour abroad - during the last twenty five years the tour of MGASO took place in more than fifty countries, including the United States, Great Britain , Japan, Spain, Austria, Italy, Germany, Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, France, South Korea, Australia, China and Switzerland.
The team created a collection of records, including CD and DVD with studio and live performances, radio and television broadcasts. In 1990, Pioneer made a live recording of Tchaikovsky's piano and violin concertos and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10 performed by the Moscow State Academic Symphony Orchestra and Maestro Kogan (soloists Alexei Sultanov and Maxim Vengerov). In the early 90's, the film "Journey with the Orchestra" was released on the tour of MGASO, directed by Pavel Kogan in Europe and St. Petersburg. The cycle of Rachmaninov's works published by the Alto label is widely known and popular: the composers created by MGASO and P. Kogan interpreted the three symphonies and the Symphonic Dances of the composer headed the lists of all existing readings.
The orchestra is proud of its partnership with outstanding conductors and soloists: Evgeny Svetlanov, Kirill Kondrashin, Alexander Orlov, Nathan Rakhlin, Samuel Samosud, Valery Gergiev, David Oistrakh, Emil Gilels, Leonid Kogan, Vladimir Sofronitsky, Sergey Lemeshev, Ivan Kozlovsky, Svyatoslav Knushevitsky, Svyatoslav Richter, Mstislav Rostropovich, Daniil Shafran and many others.
Cooperation with Pavel Kogan brought the orchestra the reputation of a team that promotes the highest standards of artistic excellence, demonstrating an artistic approach to the formation of programs that have a wide range of faithful admirers around the world. From concert to concert this wonderful tandem fully justifies its status. IGASO never stops on what has been achieved and tirelessly strives for the uncharted peaks.
