Private tour to Suburbian Residence of Russian emperor Paul I (Pavlovsk) (5 hours)

Visit the superb palace and park ensemble, dating from the late 18th to the 19th century, Pavlovsk was a summer residence of the Russian emperor Paul I and his family.

Visit the superb palace and park ensemble, dating from the late 18th to the 19th century. Pavlovsk was a summer residence of the Russian emperor Paul I and his family. Its architects were amongst the greatest of the period: Cameron, Brenna, Quarenghi, Voronikhin and Rossi. The Palace's interiors reveal a multitude of artistic and architectural influences and include an Egyptian Vestibule, the Italian Hall under the main Palace dome, featuring classical Roman sculptures, a Greek Hall filled with luxurious French furnishings and Paul's War Hall, demonstrating his fascination with all things military.

Visitors can witness the opulent splendor of the State Bedroom with its lavishly decorated bed, painted walls and elegant chandelier. The Throne Room (formerly the Dining Room) is famous for its excellent acoustics and unique plafond (ceiling painting) by Pietro Gonzaga. The palace, although smaller and less ornate than those at Tsarskoye Selo and Peterhof, has the feel of a stylish country home, whose inhabitants you can almost imagine have just left for an afternoon of hunting in the palace park.

Much of Pavlovsk's charm is derived from its wonderful landscape park. Located along the picturesque valley of the Slavyanka River, the extensive park is dotted with small pavilions and architectural follies, including the Temple of Friendship, the Colonnade of Apollo, the pavilion of the Three Graces, the Dairy Farm and the Rose Pavilion. Johan Strauss performed with an orchestra in the building of the Musical Station in the park.

Saint Petersburg : Pavlovsk
Pavlovsk is the youngest of the grand Imperial estates around St. Petersburg. Named in honour of Tsar Pavel, this fine neo-classical palace and its extensive landscaped gardens are stamped with his taste and even more so with that of his wife, the German-born Maria Feodorovna. Although there was no love lost between Pavel and his mother, Catherine the Great, it was she who originally presented him with the 362 desyatinas - 607 hectares - of land ... Read more
Near the Centaur Bridge on the bank of the Slavyanka is a small pavilion called the Cold Bath, where the royal family performed their ablutions in hot weather. A little further along is the Apollo Colonnade. Read more
In the Own garden of the Central (Pridvortsovy) district of the Pavlovsk park, near the palace is the Pavilion of Three Graces. This is the last work in the Pavlovsk park, created by the architect Charles Cameron in 1800. Read more
Pavlovsk : Pavlovsk Palace
The centrepiece of the Pavlovsk ensemble is the Great Palace, a marvellous specimen of Russian Classicism of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. It was built by Charles Cameron between 1782 and 1786. Being an admirer of the antique art, Cameron lent to all his creations an air of classical austerity and elegance.  Read more
Pavlovsk : Pavlovsk Park
Although Pavlovsk's Park has nothing like the architectural wealth that can be seen at Pushkin or Peterhof, it is one of the most charming and extensive green spaces in or around St. Petersburg, and one of the largest landscaped gardens in the world. The park's design, by Charles Cameron and Vincenzo Brenna - and, it is rumoured, Capability Brown - takes full advantage of the rolling countryside around the Slavyanka River's valley to create... Read more
Pavlovsk : Rose Pavilion
The pink pavilion is one of the most charming buildings of the Pavlovsk park, which has not only artistic but also historical value. A simple building, crowned with a dome, was built by the chief architect of Pavlovsk, Andrei Voronikhin, in 1807. Read more
The circular Dorian temple has sixteen columns and was the first structure to be built on the site by architect Charles Cameron in 1782. Tellingly, it was not a tribute to Paul I and his family who would reside there but was instead dedicated to Catherine the Great and depicted her as the goddess Minerva in a statue that was unfortunately destroyed while being transported in 1938. Read more
The city of Saint Petersburg is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful places on earth, and virtually any building in the large historic center, threaded with canals dotted with baroque bridges, can be considered an attraction—and indeed, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. This is a magical city, with a long list of major attractions. Its Hermitage Museum, housed in the Winter Palace of the Romanov Dynasty, is both one of the world's gr... Read more
