Mikhail Agafonov (Tenor)

Mikhail Agafonov graduated from the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts in Moscow in 1993. He has also studied in Wien. In 1994–1996, he was a trainee and in 1996–2001, he was a soloist with the Bolshoi Opera. In those years at the Bolshoi Theatre, he performed Don Curzio in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, Almaviva in Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia, Pollione in Bellini’s Norma, Alfredo in Verdi’s La traviata, Rodolfo in Puccini’s La Bohème, Faust in Gounod’s Faust, Lensky in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, Vladimir in Borodin’s Prince Igor, the Astrologer in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Golden Cockerel, Lykov in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Tsar’s Bride, Shuysky in Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov, Young Gypsy in Rachmaninoff’s Aleko, and Ikharev in Shostakovich’s Gamblers. In 2012 at the Bolshoi, he performed Herman in Tchaikovsky’s Queen of Spades and Calaf in Puccini’s Turandot.

Since 2001, he has been a soloist with the Manheim National Theatre. At the Theatre, he has performed Aeneas in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, Othello in Verdi’s Othello, Duke on Verdi’s Rigoletto, Radamès in Verdi’s Aida, Ismail in Verdi’s Nabucco, Don Alvaro in Verdi’s La forza del destino, Calaf in Puccini’s Turandot, Cavaradossi in Puccini’s Tosca, Edgar in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, Roberto Devereux in Donizetti’s Roberto Devereux, Turridu in Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana, Canio in Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, Andrea Chénier in Giordano’s Andrea Chénier, Enzo Grimaldo in Giordano’s La Gioconda, Assad in Goldmark’s Die Königin von Saba, and Števa Buryja in Janáček’s Jenůfa. 

He has appeared with many opera companies all over the world. He has performed the Italian Singer in Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalierwith the Wien Opera, Pollione with the Stockholm Opera, Berlin State Opera, and New Israeli Opera, the Astrologer with the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, Rodolfo (La Bohème) with the Bavarian State Opera, Hessian State Theatre of Wiesbaden, and German Opera on the Rhine, Pinkerton with the German Opera in Berlin and with the theatres of Duisburg, Antwerp, and Ghent, Manrico in Verdi’s Il trovatore with the Essen Musical Theatre, Dick Johnson in Puccini’s La fanciulla del West with the Florida Opera, Richard in Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera, Rodolfo in Verdi’s Luisa Miller, Don Carlos in Verdi’s Don Carlos, Gabriele Adorno in Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra, and Calaf with the Canadian Opera, Cavaradossi with the Paris National Opera and Dresden Semperoper, Andrea Chénier, Faust, Luigi in Puccini’s Il tabarro and Richard in Un ballo in maschera in Helsinki, Calaf with the Saarbrücken Theatre, Andrea Chénier with the New National Theatre in Tokyo, Radamès in Ghent, Canio in Düsseldorf, and Don Alvaro in Antwerp and Ghent. He has appeared in concerts at the Old Opera in Frankfurt, Philharmonic Society of Essen, and Queen Elizabeth Hall in Antwerp.
