Regarded as one of the greatest operas ever written, Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro) is a screwball comedy complete with disguises, surprises, and compromises. Figaro, the wily barber and part-time matchmaker, has finally fallen in love. But, like everything else in his life, it's complicated. On the eve of Figaro’s marriage to Susanna, his master, Count Almaviva, sets his wandering eye on the lovely bride-to-be. Servant and master go head to head, and even the Countess Rosina gets in on the action when she learns of her husband’s desires. But is she embroiled in a dangerous liaison of her own? Tchaikovsky's second and longest ballet failed to take off in the composer's lifetime but is now a worldwide favourite.Tchaikovsky's second ballet was premiered in 1890 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. It is his longest ballet, lasting nearly three hours without intervals.Despite being aware that his Swan Lake had met with little enthusiasm, Tchaikovsky enthusiastically accepted the commission to write a ballet based on Charles Perrault's La Belle au bois dormant via a version by the Brothers Grimm.Tchaikovsky's ballet focussed in on the two main conflicting forces of good - the Lilac Fairy - and evil - Carabosse. Each has their own theme, which runs through the entire work, providing a thread to the plot. Act III however takes a complete break from the two motifs and instead places focus on the individual characters at the various court dances. At the première, Tsar Alexander III summoned Tchaikovsky to the imperial box and made the simple remark 'Very nice,' which seemed to have irritated the composer, who was probably expecting more effusive appreciation. The ballet's premiere received more favourable accolades than Swan Lake from the press but Tchaikovsky sadly did not live long enough to witness his work become an instant success in theatres outside of Russia. Many of his best tunes were later turned into songs in the Walt Disney animated feature version, made in 1959. Full info

Kenneth MacMillan began work on Manon shortly after the birth of his only daughter. His source was the 18th-century French novel by Abbé Prévost, already adapted twice for opera by Massenet and Puccini. Renowned dance musician Leighton Lucas and his assistant Hilda Gaunt provided a score made from a patchwork of works by Massenet, including his famous yearning Elégie as the theme for the lovers. The premiere was given on 7 March 1974, the lead roles of Manon and Des Grieux danced by Antoinette Sibley and Anthony Dowell. The ballet quickly became a staple of The Royal Ballet's repertory. MacMillan found new sympathy with the capricious Manon, bringing his customary psychological insight and the memories of his own impoverished upbringing. He described his heroine as 'not so much afraid of being poor as ashamed of being poor'. Full info

Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov is Russia’s national epic: a tale of splendour, suffering, and the all-too human price of power. It’s one of the supreme achievements in Russian opera. If the Mariinsky is Russia’s national opera company, Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov – premiered at the Mariinsky in 1874 - is surely Russia’s national opera. Certainly, few operas look more penetratingly at the soul of a nation: scenes of pageantry are undercut by private soul-searching and state-sanctioned murder. The opera paints Russia’s artistic self-image. Full info

There’s a good reason why Swan Lake is so often called the ‘ballet of all ballets’. The combination of pure romanticism, the story about love and deception and Tchaikovsky’s famous ballet music all continue to reach new generations of audiences. Swan Lake was Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky's first score for ballet. Its 1877 premiere was poorly received, but it has since become one of the most loved of all ballets. The twinned role of the radiant White Swan and the scheming, duplicitous Black Swan tests the full range of a ballerina's powers, particularly in the two great pas de deux of Acts II and III. Other highlights include the charming Dance of the Little Swans performed by a moonlit lake and sweeping ballroom waltzes in the splendour of the royal palace. Full info

Cosi Fan Tutte, a comic tale of love tested by deception and seduction. The title, literally translated, “thus do they all” suggests that women are easily seduced and quick to fly from the arms of one love to another. The opera was a great success in its day, but for most of the nineteenth through the first half of the twentieth century, its subject matter was deemed too racy for public consumption. Since that time, it has returned to the standard repertoire and, according to recent tabulations, is the eleventh most popular opera being performed today. Full info

The most lyrical Verdi’s work is La traviata, based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas, fils The Lady of the Camellias. The title La traviata means literally The Fallen Woman, or perhaps more figuratively, The Woman Who Goes Astray. The title character of the play is Marguerite Gautier, who is based on Marie Duplessis, the real-life lover of author Dumas, fils. Duplessis was both a popular courtesan and the hostess of a salon, where politicians, writers, and artists gathered for socializing. Alexandre Dumas, père allegedly insisted on his son splitting up with Duplessis: and when he returned to Paris, she had already died of consumption. Since its debut as a play, numerous editions have been performed at theatres around the world. Giuseppe Verdi attended the Paris première of the play and soon turned to composing the opera. When Dumas, fils heard La traviata, he said: “Nobody would have remembered my Lady of the Camellias in 50 years but for Verdi, who made it immortal”. Full info

From the simplicity and intimacy of the famous fairy tale on which it is based, the ballet opens out into a spectacle of grand virtuosity, generous and incomparable displays of technique, ravishing stagecraft and unapologetic theatrical ostentation. The Sleeping Beauty has long been considered an almost ideal instance of the integration of music and dance and it is arguably the greatest of the Tchaikovsky-Petipa collaborations. Its breadth of musical and choreographic vision, its incorporation of so many dance styles and traditions into one radiant whole and its combination of sophistication and accessibility make it a classical ballet nonpareil. Iolanta – Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's last opera – was written two years before the composer’s death. In 1884 Tchaikovsky read the one-act play King Rene’s Daughter by the Danish dramatist Henrik Hertz. The poetic story of Iolanta who has been blind from birth and is cured of her ailment through love inspired Tchaikovsky, who was looking for a subject for a short, lyrical opera. The eternal gloom in which Iolanta lives peacefully becomes a symbol of spiritual blindness and the source of deep pain for those close to her. Love ignites her heart’s desire to see the world and inspires her courage to undergo the pain that will enable her to see. At the request of the composer, his brother Modest Ilyich Tchaikovsky wrote an operatic libretto after the plot of King Rene’s Daughter. The opera was written between July and December 1891, and the premiere took place at the Mariinsky Theatre on 6 December 1892. It is believed that the composer’s philosophical intentions are reflected in the plot of the opera, as he had a keen interest in the philosophy of Spinoza. Whether that is the case or not Iolanta stands apart from Tchaikovsky’s other works because of its unusual "otherworldly" plot and the touching, light and serene music. Full info

One of the most sunny pieces of the world opera literature. Full of easy humor, it recreates charming features of a cheerful fairy tale by Pushkin, whose plot underlies the libretto. However, behind the unpretentiousness of the plot there is significant sense reflecting Russian political reality of the end of the 19th century. Intrigues of sisters of the young tsarina result in that she is sent in exile to a faraway island with her son Gwidon, but there, with the help Swan Princesses, the rescued Gwidon becomes the governor of the fine magic city where they are found by tsar Saltan who did not know about the plot. He is so overjoyed that he forgives the sisters of the tsarina. Full info

Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin is a radiant example of Russian Lyric Opera. A deeply moving tale packed with big tunes, dances and a heart-stopping duel. As with his ballets, Tchaikovsky brings many symphonic elements to the music, plush orchestrations and highly melodic arias. Onegin is a uniquely Russian opera with a universality that has made it globally popular. None of the characters are easy to associate with and yet the events and their actions ring horribly true. Lohengrin is a romantic opera in three acts composed and written by Richard Wagner, first performed in 1850. The story of the eponymous character is taken from medieval German romance, notably the Parzival of Wolfram von Eschenbach and its sequel, Lohengrin, written by a different author, itself inspired by the epic of Garin le Loherain. It is part of the Knight of the Swan tradition. The opera has proved inspirational towards other works of art. Among those deeply moved by the fairy-tale opera was the young King Ludwig II of Bavaria. 'Der Märchenkönig' ('The Fairy-tale King') as he was dubbed later built his ideal fairy-tale castle and dubbed it "New Swan Stone," or "Neuschwanstein", after the Swan Knight. It was King Ludwig's patronage that later gave Wagner the means and opportunity to build a theatre for, compose and stage his epic cycle, the Ring of the Nibelung. The most popular and recognizable part of the opera is the Bridal Chorus known better as "Here Comes the Bride", played at weddings in the West. Full info

Romeo and Juliet is the most famous ballet by Prokofiev and the most ever popular ballet about love. This choreographic version of the tragedy by Shakespeare was first seen on the Mariinsky Theatre stage in 1940. It had been staged by Leonid Lavrovsky, who closely worked with Prokofiev on this production. This is an amazingly touching and thrilling performance. The Daily Telegraph: "From the present day point of view, the production has many positive qualities: the clearly defined story line; the elegant, refined dance, the lyrical duets; the sets by Pyotr Williams, the faded grandeur of which precisely conveys the atmosphere of Renaissance Italy. Here, too, absolute faith and self-giving from the two lovers, from the very depths of their souls, is essential. It is this that is brought to the ballet by the soloists of the Mariinsky Ballet Company. They are stunning; they are of those dancers who, it would appear, know instinctively that they are born for the stage" Full info

One of the most popular operas by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, The Queen of Spades, was composed in a very short period of time and became a unique masterpiece reflecting its author’s preoccupation. Tchaikovsky accepted the commission to write an opera based on the short story by Alexander Pushkin in 1889. Herman, a poor officer, is desperately in love with Lisa, a heiress to the rich old Countess. One day he learns that the Countess knows the secret of the three winning cards. Herman becomes obsessed with obtaining the secret. He tries to find out the secret, however, the old lady dies of fright. The loss of hope drives Herman mad. Soon the ghost of the Countess appears and names the secret three cards: Three, Seven, Ace. The madman rushes to the casino. Passion overcomes reason: “What’s our life? A game!” The only gain of the miserable lover is death. Full info

Il Trovatore (The Troubadour) was one of Verdi’s best-loved operas even during the composer’s lifetime. The opera received a rapturous reception when it was performed for the first time on 19 January 1853 at the Teatro Apollo in Rome and Guiseppe Verdi himself called it his most popular work. Together with La Traviata and Rigoletto the opera is still one of Verdi’s most-performed and popular operas worldwide. The plot is set in the gloomy atmosphere of 15th century Spain and tells the romantic love story of Leonora and her troubadour Manrico. An opera full of love and hate, heroism and revenge. Full info

Victorien Sardou’s drama La Tosca was created for the great actress Sarah Bernhardt. Puccini saw Sardou’s play when it was touring Italy in 1889 and, after some vacillation, obtained the rights to turn the work into an opera six years later. Turning the wordy French play into a succinct Italian opera took four years, during which the composer repeatedly argued with his librettists and publisher. The work is a melodramatic piece set in Rome in June 1800, with the Kingdom of Naples’s control of Rome threatened by Napoleon’s invasion of Italy. It contains depictions of torture, murder and suicide, yet also includes some of Puccini’s best-known lyrical arias, and has inspired memorable performances from many of opera’s leading singers. The dramatic force of Tosca and its characters continues to fascinate both performers and audiences, and the work remains one of the most frequently performed operas. Full info

August Bournonville’s La Sylphide, set to a commissioned score by Herman Lovenskjold, premiered in Copenhagen in 1836, and has remained in the repertoire of the Royal Danish Ballet to this day. In creating La Sylphide, Bournonville used the Adolph Nourrit libretto which had underpinned Filippo Taglioni’s earlier version of this ballet, with music by Jean Schneitzhoeffer, which had premiered in Paris in 1832. Taglioni’s La Sylphide is often hailed as a landmark work which heralded the Romantic era. The romantic classic La Sylphide is a story of passion and unrequited love featuring an alluring fairy and a diabolical witch.

Full info

The libretto of the opera is based on the jewel of ancient Russian literature - The Tale of Igor's Campaign. Text and music were being written for 18 years but were finished by Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov and Alexander Glazunov after the composer’s death. The opera also includes famous The Polovetsian Dances – a bright vocal-choreographic scene that has become a legend. For the 1890 premiere of Prince Igor the spirit of the wild dances was conveyed by choreographer Leo Ivanov, a co-author of the famous ballet Swan Lake.
