Built as a fortress in the 12th century, the Kremlin is an official residence of the President of the Russian Federation and the President's office. The center of the Moscow Kremlin is occupied by the main and most ancient square of the city - Cathedral Square, which still retains its original form - a unique complex of masterpieces of medieval architecture. Having been founded in the early XIVth century Cathedral Square saw the construction, destruction and rebuilding of churches and chambers, witnessed all the perturbations within the history of the Russian State. Nowadays the architectural ensemble of the Cathedral Square consists of the Assumption cathedral, Archangel's cathedral, Annunciation cathedral, the Church of Laying Our Lady's Holy Robe, the Patriarch's Palace, the Faceted Chamber, Golden Tsarina's Chamber and churches of the Terem Palace, the Ivan the Great Bell-Tower complex.

The Cathedral Square is definitely worth visiting from April to October, when the demonstration of the ceremonial mounting parade of Horse Guard and Foot Guard of the Presidential Regiment takes place in the very heart of the Moscow Kremlin. 
Assumption Cathedral - for many centuries it has been the main cathedral of the Russian State and the burial place of metropolitans and patriarchs.
Archangel's Cathedral - the cathedral-necropolis of Moscow Grand Princes, appanage Princes and first Tsars. It is devoted to St. Archangel Michael. 
Annunciation Cathedral - the home Church of Moscow Great Pinces and Tsars intended for royal ceremonies and keeping the royal treasury. 
Church of Laying Our Lady's Holy Robe - the home church of Russian metropolitans and patriarchs with remarkable iconostasis and wall-paintings and a permanent exhibition of Russian wooden sculpture in it's gallery. 
Patriarch's Palace - on of the rare examples of civil architecture of the mid XVII century. Nowadays the chambers of the Palace Houses an exposition devoted to Russian XVII century culture.
