Make your own way to Bolshoi Theatre — a theatre as famous for scandal as it is ballet and opera — in central Moscow to meet your guide, and then set off on your 3.5-hour walking tour. As you walk, listen to your guide share stories of Moscow’s history, architecture, culture and politics.

Stop by a grand monument that is dedicated to Yuri Dolgoruky, the founder of Moscow, and then stroll through the capital’s streets and winding, centuries-old lanes. Pause outside State Duma and hear how it was erected in the 1930s for Gosplan (Soviet State Planning Committee), but it is now the seat of the Russian parliament.

Wander through Red Square and hear of the protests that have taken place there. Pose for photos by the famous candy-coloured domes of St Basil’s Cathedral, and then marvel at the brilliant red State Historical Museum, where Stone Age-era artefacts are housed.

As you meander through the streets, keep on the lookout for the spires and golden domes of orthodox churches and the towering skyscrapers that are known as Stalin’s Seven Sisters. Then, be amazed as you approach the statuesque Kremlin. Nowadays, it is the residence of the Russian president, but it dates back to the 15th century when it was constructed as a castle for the Russian Tsars. Learn of the centuries of bloodshed and corruption before heading over the Moskva River.

On the other side of the river, take a moment to marvel at the Kremlin from afar and then follow your guide to Christ the Savior Cathedral, Russia’s largest church, to learn about its fascinating legends and political protests.

Next, take a well-earned rest in a local Russian cafe (own expense). As you sip on a steaming cup of tea or coffee and nibble on a traditional handmade snack, talk with your guide about the landmarks you have just seen, or ask for some local, insider tips to help you make the most of your time in Moscow.

After 3.5 hours, your tour concludes in the city centre, just a stone’s throw from the original start point.
