This is a great 4-hour tour that lets you see all the main sights of St Petersburg in a short space of time.
Arrange your private St. Petersburg walking tour to start at a time to suit your schedule. Start from the Square Palace - the very heart of the city, where your walking tour commences. Your itinerary is flexible, meaning your tour can be tailored to your preferences. If there’s something of particular interest, just let your guide know.
Set off on a stroll around Palace Square, a gorgeous central square that boasts Imperial-era architecture. Headed up by the colourful Winter Palace, Palace Square boasts not only grandiose buildings but a rich history, too; hear tales from your guide about the October Revolution in 1917 when repressed citizens stormed the Winter Palace.
First on your list is St. Isaac’s Cathedral, a delightful golden-domed creation that was built during the days of the Romanov dynasty. Walk around and marvel at its towering marble colonnades, ceiling frescoes and walls lavishly bedecked with mosaics
Take a wander down Nevsky Prospekt, seeing its bustling shops, and learn how the main street was created at the request of Tsar Peter the Great – the city’s founder and a man held in reverence by Petersburgers still today, and see two more of the city’s magnificent Russian Orthodox cathedrals.
Admire the more refined simplicity of Kazan Cathedral. You will have a chance to get inside (time permitting). Then head to the Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood – one of the city’s superstar sights. Pose for photos against its candy-coloured façade and explore inside while hearing tales of Tsar Alexander II, a reformist assassinated on the spot where the church was later built.
Now you are ready for the highlight of your tour - Singer House, located just opposite Kazan Cathedral, you definitely won’t overlook this impressing building for sure. Pavel Suzor was the designer of this building for the Russian branch of the Singer Sewing Machine Company. Initially, the management of the Company planned a huge skyscraper, such as their headquarter at this time in New York City. However, the building code in St. Petersburg says that buildings are not allowed to be built and structured higher than the Winter Palace and Hermitage. The height limit amounted 23.5 meters and the Estonian artist Amandus Adamson, as well as Suzor found a stunning solution. They crowned the six-story Art Nouveau building by a 2.8-meter glass tower, which in turn is accomplished by a glass globe sculpture at the top. It took two years to build the House of Books and it opened its doors on December 12th, 1904. It was the first modern building in Russia with fireproofed floors, ceilings and steel girders. The glass tower creates the impression of an essential elevation; nevertheless, it remains lower than the Church of the Savoir on Spilled Blood or the Kazan Cathedral. During 2004-2006 the Singer House was closed for reconstruction and was reopened as the home of several businesses, including the familiar House of Books and Café Singer, as well as headquarters of "Russian Facebook" - VK Social Network.
After the tour is over say goodbye to your guide, go enjoy the huge variety of books at the Singer House bookstore or end your visit there with a delicious Cappuccino in the second floor and a great view of the city.
