Irkutsk city walking tour with visit to Railway museum (4 hours)

During the walking tour guide will show you around the area, where 350 years ago the city was founded. You will be introduced to the history of Irkutsk and see its main sights: beautiful churches, historical buildings and monuments.

Your guide will make you visit the beautiful Russian Orthodox churches, you will see many small one- and two-storey wooden houses or cabins that are decorated with “wooden laces” (hand-made carvings) as well as modern constructions of the 20th century.

Irkutsk was founded in 1661 on the place of the junction of the Angara and the Irkut Rivers. The Irkut River gave the name to the city. At first it was just a little wooden town, but it developed very fast, and 25 years later Irkutsk was given the status of the city. Today it is one of the largest economical, industrial and cultural centers of Eastern Siberia. The citizens of the city believe that Irkutsk means for Siberia as much as Paris for France and London for England.

You will be acquainted with the unusual and unique history of the Siberian railways constructions, from the Transsib to the Baikal-Amur Mainline. Even in the days of Antiquity people knew that there was no life in places where there were no roads.

Siberia – a wide and undeveloped region – had been dying for many years without established ways of communication. The Russian railway construction had become one of the most complicated in the world.

During the excursion to the Museum of the History of the East Siberian Railway you will get to know about the most interesting episodes of its construction as well as will hear about difficulties and obstacles that were met during the process.
