The Krasnoyarsk Art Museum named after V. I. Surikov is the regional Government financed Institution of Culture. It was founded in 1957 when the Krasnoyarsk Regional Museum transferred the part of its collection to give a start for a new institution. The museum was opened for public on May 1, 1958 on the ground floor of residential building (68, newspaper “Krasnoyarskiy rabochiy” (named after) Street). Its initial name was the Krasnoyarsk Regional Art Gallery.
