Helsinki Central Station

Helsinki Central railway station is one of the most famous buildings in the capital of Finland. It is one of the of Helsinki attractions.

The station serves approximately 200,000 passengers each year. From the Central railway station is possible easily walk to many attractions: the Senate Square, Market Square, Aleksanderinkatu street, Esplanade Park. Nearby are located popular museums, shopping centers and casino.

The current station building was built in the years 1904-1914 by the architect Eliel Saarinen.

At the station is a clock tower. The diameter of clock is 3 meters. The length of the minute hand is 1.5 meters, the length of hour hand 119 centimeters.

The facade of station building is decorated with four sculptures. In their hands they hold the round lights. “Lyhdynkantajat” (lamp holders) are very well-known images not only in Finland but also in other countries. The author is sculptor Emil Wikströn. The sculptures were made in 1914.
