Local History Museum

It is the oldest Museum in the city, it acts from 1918. And this is definitely where you should start your acquaintance with the city, especially if you come here for a few days and without a tour escort. The Museum is housed in a historic building, the 19th-century. The collection consists of approximately 15,000 items! Is books, icons, furnishings and everyday life. The exposition covers the period from the middle ages to the present day.

In 2010, the Gorodets Museum of Regional Studies (the Museum, for short) celebrated its 90th anniversary. The history of the Museum started in February of 1920, when the first floor of the house in Leninskaya Street (formerly belonged to the merchant I. Oblayev) hosted the first permanent exhibition.

Many years have passed since that time; today one cannot imagine the cultural life of Gorodets without the Museum. The holdings of the Museum contain over 16,000 items. The Museum possesses unique antiquity and folk art collections that are deemed scientifically and artistically significant at the country level.

One may say that the Museum is a living organism. The Museum hosts scientific conferences, seminars, concerts and meetings with guests of the town. Every year thousands of people visit the rooms of the Museum; a rare visitor remains indifferent.

Every museum has its own image and spirit. The Gorodets Museum of Regional Studies maintains the atmosphere of a hospitable house where the employees live like a family and visitors are always welcome.

The Museum is renowned as a careful and ardent keeper of the past of its region. Each exhibit embodies its time. Getting acquainted with the museum exhibitions is like reading a book on the centuries-long history of the town.

The exposition consists of several thematic sections: Ancient Gorodets Based on Archaeological Discoveries, Peasant Daily Life, 19th Century Gorodets, Gorodets Old Believers, 20th Century Gorodets, Arms Exhibition, Inhabitants of Gorodets That Participated in the Afganistan and Chechnya Wars, Folk Crafts in the 19th Century and the First Half of the 20th Century, Modern Art Crafts, Mechant Office, Nature of the Gorodets Region. One of the ten rooms of the Museum usually hosts private exhibitions and exhibitions based on the reserve stock of the museum.

The archaeology collection is one of the most valuable. Alongside objects typical for 12th – 14th century Russian cities and towns, this collection contains unique discoveries: a 13th century helmet of a prince and a lead stamp of Alexander Nevsky.

The decorative and applied arts collection is of interest. Carved and painted distaffs, household carving samples, hand-crafted furniture, gingerbread baking moulds, Gorodets toys, gold knitting samples, etc. are on display at the Museum.
