Three Sisters

The Three Sisters of Tallinn (Kolm Õde, address Pikk 71 / Tolli 2) are three picturesque “accreted” neighboring houses with a high gable roof, on the streets of Pikk next to the Fat Margaret towers.

In such houses, residential premises were usually located on the first and second floors, and the third and fourth (if any) were used to store goods. Above the window of the upper floor was placed a wooden beam, onto which the winch was fixed, with the help of which the bags with weights were lowered and raised.

The first owners of the Three Sisters were merchants of the Great Guild, burgomasters and city councilors, who used houses for receptions and entertainments of their foreign guests, whom they met during their travels on trade or state affairs.

Nowadays, during the restoration of buildings under 14 layers of paint and wallpaper, medieval ceiling frescoes were found, and under the plaster layer on the facade were two medieval portals, window and hatch covers, as well as the coats of arms of the former homeowners and the image of a pelican feeding the young . According to a medieval legend, a pelican feeds chicks with his own blood until he dies of exhaustion - this image was very popular in Northern Europe, he personified the sacrifice of Christ on the cross in the name of the people; for example, the image of such a pelican stands at the place of honor in Malbork Castle, the “capital” of the powerful Teutonic Order.

During its long life, the Three Sisters of Tallinn changed many owners until all three houses were turned into a luxurious design hotel The Three Sisters, which is what they are today.
