Transfiguration Cathedral

On the bank of the Volga, in the most ancient part of the Uglich Kremlin rises the Transfiguration Cathedral - the main temple of the city of Uglich. The temple was erected in 1706 on the site of the dismantled ancient temple (X-XI centuries). His features embodied features characteristic of the transitional era of Russian architecture.

Near the cathedral rises a 37-meter high bell tower (1730) with a gilded head, placed on the spot where, from the old bell tower, the shouting of the last to the murder of the youngest Tsarevich Dimitri from the Rurik dynasty was announced.

Three-tiered composition from the diminishing octal is a characteristic feature of the XIX century. In 1984, the specialists of the Uglich Watch Factory installed an electric clock on the bell tower, which ring every half hour.

The Transfiguration Cathedral has an unusual interior. A large square hall with a side of 14 meters is covered with a lightly closed vault without support pillars. The cathedral was painted in 1810-1811 by the Timotheus Medvedev team. On the broad planes of the walls and arches, there are more than 50 compositions made according to the samples of European masters of the late Renaissance and Baroque.

The temple fresco "Transfiguration" is a copy from the work of Raphael.

The grandiose 6-tier iconostasis was installed in 1860. The most ancient of the icons placed here - "Protection of the Blessed Virgin" - refers to the Yaroslavl school of icon painting of the XVII century.

The icons of the Savior and the Blessed Virgin on the sides of the Royal Gates with a dark color and gilded stucco backgrounds resemble works of Ukrainian baroque of the XVII century.

The main part of the iconostasis was made in the 18th century by the prominent Moscow master F.Rozhnov.
