Fort № 11 Denkhoff

Fort № 11 Denkhoff in Kaliningrad is an interesting architectural and military facility, hidden in the green of trees behind a high brick wall and massive gates. After 133 years from the date of commissioning, Fort 11 is open to visitors. On the territory of Fort No. 11 Dönhoff reigns a serene atmosphere of relaxation.

The central entrance to Fort No. 11 building (Friedrich von Dönhoff) is decorated with two guns. Above, the years of construction of the fort 1877-1881 and the coat of arms of the genus Dönhoff have been stamped out. Inside the fort there is a string of corridors, rooms, stairs and doors. With self-examination, you can not only get lost, but also look at something important and interesting.

One of the fortress's powder cellars presents a historical chronicle in photographs of 1944. A graphic illustration shows how the historical center of Koenigsberg looked after the bombing of the city by British pilots during the Second World War. For the first time on the city of Koenigsberg, napalm bombs were tested. They burned down the whole city center, which burned for several days. In the building of the fort, by the way, there was also a fire, but already in peacetime. You can see the stairs that melted from the heat and the brick ceiling in the rooms frozen in fouling.

The structure of the fort relative to the center is symmetrical and has two internal courtyards: left and right. The inner yard of the fort is a cozy green location, protected by trees and high earthen ramparts. You can get into the courtyard from the ground floor of the building or from higher levels through the floor shaft.

On the territory of Fort No. 11 in Kaliningrad, a coffee house and a field kitchen are open daily in the left courtyard. Here you can refresh yourself with porridge or warm hot coffee after visiting the cool dark rooms and corridors of the military building.

A distinctive feature of Fort No. 11 from other military installations of the defensive ring of Koenigsberg (Kaliningrad) is the presence of an armored observation post W.T.90. Outside, only an armored hood is visible. It rotates manually from the inside and has two small observation holes, which can be closed and opened if necessary. Inside the building you can find a narrow mine of an armored post, climb it up the stairs and see what a 360 degree view opens.

Forts of Koenigsberg, built in the 19th century, during the Second World War did not represent a serious obstacle to the advancing Soviet army with bombers, aircraft and massive military equipment. Without serious resistance, Fort No. 11 capitulated on April 7, 1945. The absence of fierce fighting during the war and the fact that the fort was used after it by the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation made it possible to keep Fort No. 11 in working order.
