Nikolskaya Sopka (Nikolskaya Hill)

Petropavlovsk's most charming spot for a walk, this thickly wooded hill is in the centre of the city between the harbour and the lake. There are numerous winding paths through the trees and some splendid views of Avacha Bay.

Sopka Nikolskaya is situated in the center of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. It is one of the favorite places of citizens. They called it “The Hill of love”.  They come here for a walk and used to sunbathe at its’ top in spring and summer.

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky owes its birth to Nikolskaya hill. Ivan Elagin — the navigator — the city founder noticed convenient bay situated between two hills. One of the hills was named Nikolskaya, another one– Petrovskaya.

Nikolskaya hill became a sacred place after a famous defense of the city in August 1854 as it was the main battleground for the port of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

At the bottom of the hill’s eastern side the Common grave of city defenders is situated. In 1912 the monument “Chaple” was built there.
Starting from 1920 the Hill was purified and became the city Park of Culture and Rest. At the end of 60 s the park was liquated. In 1983 the Hill was awarded the status of Monument of nature.
