Perm State Art Gallery

The existence of the gallery begins with the opening in 1902 of the art department of Perm Scientific Industrial Museum. In the 1920s the collection was replenished with significant number of the ancient Russian works of decorative-applied art and sculptures. In 1922 the Museum of Art was opened under Perm State Regional Museum which in 1936 became independent, and was called as the Art Gallery.

Since the opening, the gallery became a center of artistic life in the region. An inportant role in the formation of the collections was played by N.N. Serebrennikov – a collector of unique Perm wooden sculpture, Stroganov icons, author of catalogues from the gallery collection. In 1941 many collections of the Russian Museum were evacuated to Perm and lcated in the Art Gallery.

Perm State Art Gallery (PSAG) is one of the largest museums in the Ural region. The gallery collections consisti of about 43.000 of items and include the works of Russian and Western European art of various artistic schools, styles and trends of XV-XX centuries. They include painting, drawing, sculpture, decorative and folk art of Russia and Europe. The gallery has the collections of antique ceramics, art of ancient Egypt, Tibetan bronzes, as well as arts and crafts of Japan, India and China. In addition to the works of art the gallery stores the personal collection of the prominent figures of culture and art - P. N. Serebrennikov, P. I. Subbotin-Permyak, V. A. Obolensky, etc.
